This is our floof, Winston!
He's the sweetest little nugget you'll ever meet and he's got a great temperament.

WHY WE CHOSE A GOLDENDOODLE

After 6 months of marriage, I started badgering my husband, Andy, to get a dog.
"We've been married long enough. We should get a puppy!"
We weren't ready to have kids, but I felt that we were ready for that half-step.

It was always in our plan to get a pupper, but we had to start looking.
We had each grown up with dogs, but had different ideas of what kind of dog we should get.
Andy wanted a small dog; I wanted a big dog.
He wanted one that doesn't shed; I wanted a Golden Retriever.
Possibly the only thing we agreed on was that it had to be family friendly.

We started looking into different breeds and found a plethora of options.
It's overwhelming how many different types on dog there are, not to mention mutts.

When choosing a dog breed, you need to have your top priorities.
Ours included:
Family friendly & good with kids
Minimal shedding
Okay with being home alone while we're working
Smart
Minimal drooling & kissing
Easy to train
And, of course, size

After a few days, we narrowed it down to a poodle mix.
After a few more days, down to Labradoodle vs. Goldendoodle.

When looking at the 2 breeds, they are very comparable.
Though both are excellent family dogs, we chose the Goldendoodle because they are a little less hyper.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOLDENDOODLES

First of all, Goldendoodles come in different sizes.
You can get them in a variety of 3 sizes: Miniature, Medium, & Standard.

Miniature Goldendoodles
A cross-breed of a Golden Retriever and a Toy Poodle.
They weigh about 15-30 pounds.

Medium Goldendoodles
A cross-breed of a Golden Retriever and a Miniature Poodle.
They weigh about 30-50 pounds.

Standard Goldendoodles
A cross-breed of a Golden Retriever and a Standard Poodle.
They weigh about 50-90 pounds.
Once you've chosen the size, you need to figure out how much poodle you want them to have.
This can be great for people who are allergic to dogs and will minimize shedding.

F1 Goldendoodles
A cross-breed of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle.
This is a first generation Goldendoodle and makes them 50% of each breed.

F1B Goldendoodles
A cross-breed of an F1 Goldendoodle and a Poodle.
This makes them 25% Golden Retriever and 75% Poodle.

F2 Goldendoodles
A cross-breed of two F1 Goldendoodles.
This makes them 50% of each breed.

F2B Goldendoodles
A cross-breed of an F1 Goldendoodle and an F1B Goldendoodle.
This makes them 37% Golden Retriever and 63% Poodle.

Make sense?

FINDING A BREEDER

Y'all. This is ridiculous!
Once we had figured out which breed we wanted, we started looking for a breeder.
And holy moly! There's a lot of breeders out there.
On top of the endless options, any that have been doing it for a while are charging a fortune.

Now, over the lifetime of the dog, you're going to spend a lot of money on them.
They need food, toys, bedding, crate, carpet cleaner, shots, vet visits, flea & tick treatment, water & food bowls, training treats, obedience school.
You know the drill. There's so much!

We knew that a large amount on the front end wouldn't be that much in the grand scheme of things.
But we knew there had to be some breeders out there who were just getting started and would charge less.

That being said, with a smaller breeder comes risk, so be careful as you search and make sure you find someone legitimate.

We actually got on Facebook. I joined about 5 or 6 different Goldendoodle breeder groups.
I posted in each one when we wanted a puppy, the color we were looking for, the size we wanted him to be full-grown, that we wanted a male, and that we lived in Georgia, but were willing to travel.

NARROWING IT DOWN

Over the next few days, we got probably a total of 100 different comments and messages with info about potential puppies.
I was thrilled! I've never been so popular!

We went through and narrowed down by price and the size of the parents.
I asked A LOT of questions. Bless all those breeders who took the time to answer and were so sweet when I told them that we'd chosen another.

When we had to list down to maybe 3 or 4, we looked at the location.
We were getting messages from people all over the country.

The cheapest one we had found was $500 from New York.
They were even willing to put him on a plane, though I'm sure it would have cost more.
We thought about it, but passed, not willing to give up on the chance to meet the breeder in person and the puppy before we committed.

Andy really wanted a black one, but they are more expensive due to the more unique coloring.
So we decided against that one too.

I messaged one of the breeders again and asked about their remaining puppies.
She responded back and let us know that there were only a few left.
The smallest one in the litter was one of her most well behaved and responded well to treats and training.

At $850 and a great temperament, we decided to go with this nugget.
I told Andy, "I would pay more for a great temperament and he's one of the cheapest we've found!"
The breeder has a Facebook page and often posted updates on the puppies.
Vet appointment, outings, cute pictures, and training; they were legit.

Less than a month later, we drove home from visiting my family in Missouri and had a puppy in the back seat!
After going to our first vet appointment with Winston, our vet commented on what a great job the breeder had done.
She was surprised to hear that this was their first litter.

I still follow the breeders, King George's Goldendoodles, to see Winston's siblings and half-siblings.
Each new litter is fun to watch!

WHY YOU NEED A GOLDENDOODLE

Photography by Britt G. Photography
1. They're adorable!
How can you say no to a face like this?! Their curly hair is soft and luscious.

2. They're super friendly!
You'll never be lonely and they'll love everyone.
You'll never have to worry about them being nasty or biting.

3. They don't shed!
That being said, you will need to keep them groomed, brushed, and bathed regularly.

4. They are super smart!
The Poodle is the 2nd smartest dog and the Golden Retriever is the 4th smartest.
That makes for a very intelligent mix of dog!

5. They're clean drinkers!
You know those dogs who drink water and half of it ends up in their beard and all over the floor.
As long as you keep their beards trimmed, you won't have to worry about cleaning up water all the time.

6. They come in all different sizes!
Whatever size dog you're looking for, you can get it in a Goldendoodle.
Unless you want one of those tea cup dogs... they don't come that small.

7. They can stay home alone.
They will get stressed with long periods of time being alone, but for the most part, they're great at being home.

8. They love exercise!
Need a running buddy? No problem!
They're energy never seems to end.

9. Great for training!
If you stay on top of training, they're great dogs and very obedient!
But remember that any dog who doesn't get enough attention and praise will misbehave.
They're essentially little toddlers in puppy bodies.

10. They're great for a family!
Doodles in general are great family dogs!
They love people and are great with children.
